DJ Big Dolla Bill,
I have always been a music fanatic and grew up listening to my mothers flavor of Motown, blues and old country music.
As a teenager In the 80's I bounced from genre to genre. listening to punk, ska, reagge, metal to classic rock. but as the
then hip hop scene began to form I fell in love with that street sound.
Even as a broke art student in San Francisco, I was buying up every new urban track that came to my ears. My one
regret to this day is that I bought cassette tapes instead of vinyl. Arrrggghh!
A few years back my 5 disc CD changer broke. In looking for a replacement I came across some DJ equipment
that was about the same price of my old CD player. A former co-worker Stephen Marshall at one point showed
me the basics on how to mix. So I thought why not.
I am not sure when it happened but next thing I know my friends were asking me to play their house parties.
Then I was asked to play at a few bars/clubs and it has been stupid fun ever since. Still today my favorite venue is to play
a house party for a bunch of my friends. I think it is those house parties that make SF the intimate small town it sometimes
feels like.
Living in San Francisco is a true blessing in that one gets exposed to so many diverse cultures, experimental lifestyles and
odd combinations of music. I am not sure you can get all of that anywhere else. Going to a club in SF you may hear rock, reggae, funk,
breaks or house. This can happen all in one night and sometimes from the same band or DJ. I love that diversity and my varied taste
in of this music is part of my Djing style.
So when you come out to hear me play get ready to hear some old school hip hop, mixed and mashed up with pop, rock and what
ever else seems appropriate to keep the dancefloor movin. I hate the idea of sticking to one genra of music. How boring!
OK OK about the DJ name, a couple of my ex-girlfriends used to call me that as a joke when I was making the big internet boom dollars.
I always thought a DJ name should be something that folks have called you. I really don't take myself that serious and the name seemed
kinda fun. And it stuck. I love it when my friends yell at me "Holla holla, Big Dolla!"
I am also a founding member of The Fringe Arts Collective a group of
Burning Man veterans who support live music, performing acts & visual arts. We host a diverse
range of events like Freaksgiving, SF Decompression (21St. Stage), Freqo-de-Mayo, The IceBreakers Ball, Faux Years Eve and are woking on some other
crazy ideas to make your nightlife experiences richer and just a whole lot more fun.
Currently, I hold a residency at Mars Bar SF(Happy hour every 2nd Friday) in SOMA.
My crew and I can be heard playing at events like Get Freaky,
Bootie SF and with the circus freaks at Bohemian Carnival & Cirque Berzerk.
